Privacy Policy

Google Play requires developers to provide a valid privacy policy when the app requests or handles sensitive user or device information.

HUD Speedometer respects your privacy, and details of how the permissions operate are provided below.

HUD Speedometer requires four permissions:

  • Location
  • Contacts
  • SMS
  • Network Access

For Android “Lollipop” (Version 5.1.1 or API 22 and older), the permissions above are accepted during the app installation.

For Android “Marshmallow” (Version 6.0 or API 23 and newer), the permissions above are accepted only when the permission is required.

  • The Location permission is requested when HUD Speedometer starts, in order to detect your travelling speed via GPS.
  • The Contacts and SMS permissions are requested if you enable the option to Read SMS Messages in the Settings.

Full details for each permission are described below:

Contacts
  • Read your contacts
    • When an SMS message arrives, HUD Speedometer can read the message aloud, allowing you to hear your messages while driving.
    • To achieve this, HUD Speedometer checks whether the phone number of the SMS sender is in your contacts list so it can inform you the name of the person who sent the SMS message.
    • If the SMS was from a known contact, you will hear:
      • “New message from <Contact Name>.  <Followed by your SMS message>”
    •  If the SMS was not from a known contact, you will hear:
      • “New message from unknown contact.  <Followed by your SMS message>”
    • Your contact data is not modified, stored, uploaded or shared.
    • HUD Speedometer simply looks up the contact name and speaks it when an SMS message arrives.
    • The feature to read aloud SMS messages can be turned off in the Settings.
Location
  • Precise location (GPS and network-based)
    • Speed
      • The GPS permission is used to discover the speed you are travelling at, in order to display your current speed on the display.
    • Distance
      • The GPS permission is also used to log the distance travelled.  To do this, two locations are stored in memory; Your current location, and your previous location.  The distance between the two locations is stored in memory in order to display the distance travelled on the screen.
      • The location data is not stored, uploaded or shared.  It is simply displayed on screen, and erased when the app is closed.
SMS
  • Receive text messages (SMS)
    • To provide a hands-free driving experience, HUD Speedometer can read your SMS messages aloud while you are driving.  This permission is required to detect the arrival of new SMS messages, and then read them aloud.
    • The feature to read aloud SMS messages can be turned off in the Settings.
Other
  • View network connections & Full network access
    • HUD Speedometer is a free application.  Continued development and improvements are supported by Ad Revenue, which require a network connection to download the advert.
